About me
I'm a San Francisco Bay Area fine artist, illustrator, and storyteller with an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

My Philosophy
I'm interested in the underlying motivations behind doing and making things. Because we have so many different--and valid--motivations, to see finished work without judging it, I feel that it helps a viewer's appreciation to guess the intentions behind it, and how well the result meets those intentions. My motivations as an illustrator, for example, can be completely different than my motivations as a fine artist. As the latter, my philosophy is closely aligned with the ideas of Corita Kent and A. K. Coomaraswamy.

As an art instructor, I attempt to create a safe space for students to explore, discover, experiment, and practice, focusing on their aim: to realize their intentions in visual form. How to foster the spirit of creativity--and knowing when and how to look at our work with critical eye--is an art form in itself, requiring sensitivity, responsibility, and care. Building mastery entails a tremendous amount of practice, but in time, we may discover not so much how to never make mistakes--but rather how to appreciate the unexpected marks, and incorporate them into our work such that it can have more vitality and spirit than we could ever willfully give it. Our work can ultimately become the physical result of a dialogue between the artist and the spirit of inspiration.
